Forum: GratefulDead Subject: Re: Pigpen & Keith Recommendations?

I have often thought that the E72 sound was the ideal Dead sound . Keith's baby grand sound ( note: REAL piano, most electric pianos, even modern ones sound toneless and fake, I know hauling around a fussy instrument like a piano is a bitch, and trying to mike it is tough, in a Rock setting , I do, however like an electric piano that isn't trying to sound too much like a real one , i.e. , a Fender Rhodes ), Pig's tasteful fills, and the 3 axemen have such a lovely , rich sound ,and.. Billy K, is great on his own .
When they added Hornsby, ( who said he was going for a E72 sound ) , It just wasn't the same . Sometimes it is great , but it ican be cluttered, unintegrated . Some of this is the personalities of the 2 Keys guys, but some of it is the rest of the band , and some of it is the mix . It never sounds cluttered with Pig and Keith .
